Trader Killed In Lagos Road Mishap Despite Swift Response By LASTMA

A yet-to-be-identified street trader was on Monday killed in a road accident in Lagos, despite a swift response by officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority.

The incident, which occurred along a busy corridor in the metropolis, caused panic as commuters and bystanders scrambled for safety following the crash involving a commercial vehicle.

Eyewitnesses said the trader, who was hawking goods by the roadside, was fatally struck after the driver of a speeding vehicle reportedly lost control and veered off the carriageway.

Officials of LASTMA arrived at the scene shortly after receiving a distress call and made efforts to rescue the victim while also managing the ensuing traffic congestion.

A statement by the agency confirmed that although its personnel responded promptly, the victim could not be saved due to the severity of the injuries sustained.

“Our officers moved swiftly to the scene following a distress alert. Unfortunately, the victim succumbed to injuries before further medical intervention could be secured,” the statement said.

The agency added that the driver involved in the crash had been apprehended and handed over to relevant authorities for further investigation and possible prosecution. Traffic officials also cleared the wreckage to restore normal vehicular movement after hours of disruption.

Reacting, the General Manager of LASTMA, Bolaji Oreagba, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and reiterated the agency’s commitment to enforcing road safety.

“This unfortunate incident underscores the need for motorists to exercise caution and adhere strictly to traffic regulations. Speeding and reckless driving continue to pose grave dangers to road users, particularly pedestrians and traders operating along highways,” he said.

He also warned against street trading on major roads, describing it as a dangerous practice.

“We urge residents to use designated markets and avoid hawking on highways. It is unsafe and often leads to tragic consequences,” Oreagba added.

The incident has again raised concerns over road safety compliance and the persistent challenge of street trading along major highways in Lagos.

Authorities urged the public to promptly report emergencies and cooperate with traffic officials to enhance safety across the state.
