Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said he will not contest for the presidency again after the 2027 general election.
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday, where he explained that age and the demands of the office were key factors behind his decision.
According to him, the 2027 election will likely be his final attempt to become Nigeria’s president.
“Certainly yes, because the stakes are higher and I believe that will be my last outing,” he said.
Atiku, who was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 election, has contested for the presidency several times since returning to active politics in 2003.
His journey dates back to 1993 when he contested under the Social Democratic Party but stepped down for the late Moshood Abiola.
He later ran in 2007 under the Action Congress but lost to former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.
In 2011, he contested again under the Action Congress of Nigeria but was defeated by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Atiku returned to the PDP and contested the 2019 presidential election, losing to former President Muhammadu Buhari.
In 2023, he again emerged as the PDP candidate but lost to President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress.
Over the years, Atiku has remained vocal on issues such as restructuring, economic reforms and private sector growth.
With political activities already building up ahead of 2027, his statement is expected to shape discussions around the next presidential race and the future direction
of his political career.
