Three Key Battles That Could Decide Arsenal vs Chelsea at the Emirates

Chelsea head to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday knowing they can ill-afford another slip-up. After dropping valuable Premier League points at home to Burnley and Leeds United, Liam Rosenior’s side are under pressure to respond against an Arsenal team that has already beaten them twice this season.

With Champions League qualification hanging in the balance, the Blues must win several crucial individual duels if they are to leave north London with all three points.

Here are the three battles that could define the London derby.

1. Joao Pedro vs Gabriel Magalhaes

When the sides met in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg, Arsenal’s centre-backs ultimately came out on top. But Joao Pedro did not make life easy for Gabriel.

Pedro’s strength and hold-up play repeatedly tested the Brazilian defender, often forcing him into fouls just to regain possession. Although Arsenal progressed 4-2 on aggregate after a 1-0 win on the night, the contest between the two South Americans was intense throughout.

If Pedro can once again pin Gabriel back and bring teammates like Cole Palmer into play earlier and more frequently, Chelsea will believe they can create genuine scoring opportunities. Palmer only featured for half an hour in that previous meeting; a bigger contribution from him this time could change the dynamic entirely.

Arsenal’s defence has been one of the league’s most reliable units, but Pedro has the physical tools and confidence to unsettle it.

2. Moises Caicedo vs Declan Rice

The midfield clash could prove decisive.

Caicedo remains Chelsea’s defensive anchor, tasked with shielding the back line and breaking up opposition transitions. Across from him, Rice has evolved into a more dynamic presence for Arsenal, driving forward to support attacks while maintaining his defensive discipline.

If Rice is allowed to surge through midfield unchecked, Chelsea’s defence could be exposed — particularly against Arsenal’s quick wide players. Conversely, if Caicedo can dominate the central areas and disrupt Arsenal’s rhythm, the Blues will have a platform to counter.

This duel is not just about tackles and interceptions; it is about territorial control. Whichever midfielder imposes himself is likely to tilt the match in his team’s favour.

3. Bukayo Saka vs Chelsea’s left-back

With Marc Cucurella unavailable, Chelsea face a selection headache at left-back. Whether Rosenior turns to Jorrel Hato or Malo Gusto, the task remains daunting: stopping Bukayo Saka.

Saka has consistently been one of the Premier League’s most dangerous wide players, capable of stretching defences, cutting inside to shoot, or delivering decisive final balls. Cucurella has previously managed to limit his influence, but without the Spaniard, Arsenal may look to overload Chelsea’s left flank.

If Saka finds space and time, he could dictate the tempo of Arsenal’s attack and potentially decide the match. Chelsea’s makeshift left-back must be disciplined, positionally sharp, and well-supported to prevent the winger from taking control.

Rosenior Chasing History

Beyond the tactical battles, there is also a milestone at stake for Liam Rosenior. Victory at the Emirates would see him match a record set by Tim Sherwood during his time at Tottenham Hotspur in the 2013-14 season — winning his first three Premier League away matches as a manager.

Rosenior has already overseen impressive away victories since taking charge, and another triumph would further strengthen Chelsea’s push for a top-five finish.

However, Arsenal — led by Mikel Arteta — are a far stronger outfit than in previous years, particularly defensively. The Gunners remain firmly in the title race and will view this fixture as another opportunity to assert their dominance over a London rival.

For Chelsea, the equation is simple: win the individual battles, and they stand a chance of winning the war. Lose them, and their Champions League hopes could suffer another damaging blow.
