AFCON 2025: Osimhen six goals from erasing Yekini’s long-standing record

Victor Osimhen has moved closer to making history for Nigeria after scoring against Tunisia at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Super Eagles striker scored with a header as Nigeria beat Tunisia 3–2 on Saturday. The win was Nigeria’s second at the tournament and confirmed their place in the round of 16.

Osimhen missed some good chances in the first half before finally scoring from a cross by Ademola Lookman. The goal was important for both the team and his personal record.

With that goal, the 26-year-old has now scored 32 goals for Nigeria. This means he is only five goals away from breaking the national record of 37 goals set by the late Rashidi Yekini many years ago.

Osimhen is now clearly ahead of Segun Odegbami on the all-time scorers list, sitting nine goals above him.

As the tournament continues, many Nigerians will be watching to see if Osimhen can score more goals and finally break Yekini’s long-standing record.
