Bestselling ‘Shopaholic’ Author Sophie Kinsella Passes Away

Sophie Kinsella, the beloved writer behind the global bestseller Shopaholic series, has died at the age of 55. Her family announced that she passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after battling an aggressive form of brain cancer diagnosed in 2022.

Born Madeleine Sophie Wickham, the author leaves behind a remarkable literary legacy. Her books have sold over 50 million copies across more than 60 countries and have been translated into over 40 languages, making her one of the world’s most successful modern romantic-comedy writers.

Her family described her final days as being filled with “family, music, warmth, Christmas and joy,” adding that she faced her illness with immense courage. They said they were heartbroken to lose someone whose love of life and gratitude touched everyone around her.

Tributes poured in from the literary community. Her publishers praised her for elevating romantic comedy with characters and stories that blended humour, emotional depth, and real-life challenges. Fellow authors remembered her as both a gifted storyteller and a warm, generous person.

Kinsella’s career began early. She wrote her first novel, The Tennis Party, at just 24 while working as a financial journalist. She later adopted the pen name Sophie Kinsella and found global fame with The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic, introducing the unforgettable Becky Bloomwood. The series later inspired the 2009 film Confessions of a Shopaholic starring Isla Fisher.

Over her career, she wrote numerous bestsellers, including Can You Keep A Secret?, The Undomestic Goddess, and several children’s books. Though her work was often labelled “chick lit,” she resisted the term, preferring to focus on creating joyful, relatable stories for readers everywhere.

Her most recent work, a 2024 novella titled What Does It Feel Like?, offered a semi-fictional look into her cancer journey , a reflection of how she often processed life through storytelling.

Sophie Kinsella is survived by her husband Henry and their five children, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, humour, and unforgettable characters.
