Federal Capital Territory ( FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike has finally terminated the contract for the construction of Apo-Wasa-Karshi road awarded in 2011 to Kakatar Engineering.
This came after several pledges by the construction company for more time and resources to enable it complete the road.
Recall that there had been a public outcry over the delay on the road works and also the work style of the contractor which residents of the area believe has no capacity to handle a strategic road network of that nature.
The Minister, who on Thursday inspected the ongoing road construction at Gishiri and Karu, disclosed that the contract of the Apo-Wasa-Karshi road has been taken from Kakatar and re-awarded to another company, SCC.
Wike said that SCC had already commenced work on the road under emergency response systems which the FCT administration created to attend to urgent governance issues.
According to the Minister, an important road like that initiated to congest traffic from some parts of the city cannot be left in the hands of non-performing contractors.
He said, “ Let me tell you the truth, we have terminated that contract; it has been reawarded to SCC. If you go there now, you’ll see that they’ve started work. It’s a road that so many people are very interested in because it will decongest some of these areas.
“ So that’s why we should do it, and like I said, we cannot continue to play politics when it comes to the welfare of the people. That road has been terminated”.
He equally announced that his administration has awarded another contract for the construction of an alternative road, leading from Kubwa to Bwari where the Nigerian Law School and the JAMB headquarters are located.
“ And the road leading from Kubwa to Bwari has also started, so that there will be an alternative route to Bwari. That’s also awarded to SCC. So, we can assure you that things are moving very well according to plan”, he added.
