Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, the Chairman, Badagry Local Government (BLG), Lagos, on Wednesday distributed food items to more than 2,000 residents as part of activities to mark his 100 days in office.
Speaking before distribution of the items, Hunpe said the gesture tagged, “Asiwaju Food Palliative Programme” was a demonstration of his commitment to stand with the people during difficult economic times.
He said: “Across the country, households are struggling and families are making sacrifices every day to adjust to the working policies of our dear President.
“As a local government, we understand there is no gain without its pain, and so, we are determined to provide support, no matter how modest, to ensure that no family is left behind.
“Our goal in this first phase is to reach 2,000 families across the entire local government, particularly families in our riverine areas and our underserved neighbourhoods.
“We have put in place a transparent and community-based distribution system that ensures fairness, equity, and access for the most vulnerable households.”
Distribution of solar street lights to communities in Badagry, Hunpe said that the food items consisted of rice, beans, spaghetti, groundnut oil, garri and salt.
He noted that the initiative was inspired by the compassionate leadership style of President Bola Tinubu, whose social intervention philosophy prioritised the poor, the elderly, widows, and struggling families.
“It is only fitting that we name this programme after a leader whose life has been defined by giving hope and creating opportunities for others.
“In the council, we are aligning ourselves with that same spirit of responsive leadership,” he said.
The chairman said that in 100 days, his administration had taken bold steps in road construction, school reconstruction, increased revenue mobilisation, tourism revitalisation, and improved community engagement.
He urged all the beneficiaries to take the food items home and share them with their families.
“To all beneficiaries, this support is a token, but it carries a message – you are not forgotten.
“BLG stands with you, and we will continue to devise creative and sustainable ways to reduce hardship and uplift our people,” he said.
He assured the residents that the palliative distribution would be a quarterly exercise, charging them to continue to support the ruling party.
Mr Olusegun Onilude, the past chairman, BLG, urged the residents to cooperate with the present administration in order to enjoy the dividends of democracy.
Chief MZ Ogunbiyi, an APC chieftain in Badagry, urged residents to ensure they collected their Permanent Voter Cards at the ongoing registration by INEC.
Mrs Senanyon Adamson, one of the beneficiaries, commended the chairman for remembering them during this trying period.
Ten solar street lights were given to four communities each in Badagry to ensure security of life and property in the areas.
