Reps Hold High-Level Security Dialogue With Foreign Partners

Nigeria’s House of Representatives convened a focused plenary session dedicated to examining the country’s mounting security concerns, welcoming a visiting delegation from St. Kitts and Nevis led by Speaker Lanein Blanchette, alongside officials from the United States Embassy.

The sitting centred on a broad Internal Assessment report prepared by multiple committees. The document reviews security incidents nationwide, highlights shifting patterns, summarises oversight findings, and evaluates earlier parliamentary resolutions. Committees overseeing defence, intelligence, policing, human rights, interior affairs, foreign relations, women and youth development, and disaster preparedness were scheduled to present detailed, evidence-based updates.

A formal outcome document is projected to follow the session, outlining agreed interventions, deadlines, and monitoring structures.

Speaker Tajudeen Abbas opened the proceedings by reaffirming Nigeria’s sovereignty and longstanding ties with the United States. He noted that the House is ready to deepen collaboration with Washington on issues shaping Nigeria’s security framework. Abbas also revealed that legislators are thoroughly reviewing the proposed Religious Freedom Accountability Bill, stressing that both Christian and Muslim communities have endured targeted assaults from extremist groups.

He further voiced concern over the series of coups unfolding across West Africa, describing them as developments Nigeria must monitor closely.

More updates expected.
