The Nigeria Police Force has begun recalling all officers assigned to VIP protection nationwide after President Bola Tinubu directed an immediate end to the use of police personnel for private security duties. The order triggered a memo from SPU Base 16 in Lagos, signed by Commanding Officer Neji Veronica and shared by presidential aide Bayo Onanuga, instructing every officer attached to VIPs to report back to base without delay.
Officers were told to return before the close of work on November 24 and attend a compulsory lecture parade the following day, with attendance taken from the nominal roll. The directive emphasized strict compliance from all affected personnel across the federation.
Under the new security structure, VIPs who require protection will now rely on the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps instead of police officers. The Presidency explained that this change aims to strengthen policing capacity in communities that suffer from limited manpower, particularly in remote areas where residents face growing vulnerability to attacks.
To support the shift, President Tinubu approved the recruitment of 30,000 police officers and ordered improvements to training facilities through collaboration with state governments. The decision follows a series of violent incidents in Northern Nigeria, including attacks in Kebbi and Kwara, which highlighted the need to redeploy police officers back to core law-enforcement duties.
