Graeme Souness has delivered a harsh evaluation of Mohamed Salah’s recent displays, insisting the Liverpool forward no longer shows the sharpness and hunger that defined his peak years. His comments come as Liverpool continue to struggle through one of their worst starts in recent memory.
Liverpool’s 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest at Anfield added to a troubling run of eight defeats in 11 matches across all competitions. Despite heavy investment in the summer — highlighted by the arrivals of Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike — the team has failed to match last season’s title-winning level.
Salah, one of the club’s most reliable performers for years, has also seen a major drop in output. After producing 57 goals and assists in 52 games last season, the 33-year-old has found the net just five times in 17 appearances this term. Opponents have repeatedly targeted his side of the pitch, exposing weaknesses and further highlighting his reduced impact.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Souness didn’t hold back. He said Salah — usually one of the first names in any all-time Liverpool XI — looks like a completely different player this season. He recalled noticing issues as early as the Community Shield defeat to Crystal Palace, citing a moment when Salah failed to challenge for a routine ball down the flank.
Souness stressed that while Salah has never been known for physical battles, the lack of effort and intensity is what concerns him the most. He described the forward as showing “a lack of appetite,” insisting that tough criticism may be necessary to spark a revival.
Liverpool, already under pressure, now look to their veteran attacker to rediscover his drive and help lift the squad out of its ongoing slump.
