Nigeria Facing Deeply Troubling Period — Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has raised alarm over what he described as a surge of “deeply negative developments” across Nigeria within just 10 days, attributing the situation to broad leadership failings.

In a statement released on Monday, Obi cautioned that the country is slipping into a state of “avoidable disorder,” driven by insecurity, rising lawlessness, and weakened national institutions.

According to him, the last 10 days have been marked by an overwhelming wave of disturbing reports — chaos, rising threats, and institutional collapse — which he said should concern every leader in the country. He insisted that Nigeria’s current difficulties are not accidental but the product of leadership gaps that have allowed these problems to persist.

Obi said each day brings a new tragedy, reflecting, in his words, the absence of competent, responsive, and humane leadership. He lamented that a nation rich in resilient people has been allowed to slide into preventable turmoil.

He referenced several violent incidents, including the killing of a Brigadier General, the kidnapping of 64 people in Zamfara, the abduction of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi, an attack on worshippers in Kwara, and the kidnapping of more than 300 pupils and teachers in Niger State.

He also highlighted a fresh attack in Borno State, saying he had received another troubling report that 13 female farmers in Askira-Uba Local Government Area had been abducted by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP fighters. Police authorities later confirmed that at least 12 women were taken while returning from their farms.

Obi stressed that no serious nation hides behind excuses or detached leadership. He argued that Nigeria is in distress because leaders have chosen convenience over courage and politics over genuine public service. He reminded those in power that leadership is a responsibility — not a title — and that their primary duty is to protect every citizen.

Obi urged political leaders to emphasize competence, empathy, and accountability, saying Nigerians deserve security and peace. He added that despite the challenges, he believes the country can recover.

“To every Nigerian unsettled by these events, my thoughts are with you,” he said. “You deserve safety. You deserve peace. Nigeria will rise again.”
