Amid rising tension over the recent schoolgirl abductions in Kebbi State, Vice President Kashim Shettima departed Abuja on Wednesday to directly engage with local authorities and affected families. His visit comes at the express instruction of President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing the federal government’s commitment to resolving the crisis.
According to Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima’s spokesman, the Vice President is scheduled to meet with Governor Nasiru Idris, traditional rulers, security officials, and parents of the kidnapped students to coordinate a unified response.
“The President has tasked the Vice President with assuring the people of Kebbi State that the federal government is fully committed to the safe and swift release of the abducted girls,” Nkwocha explained. He added that Shettima’s mission also includes conveying the President’s condolences for recent security setbacks and reaffirming nationwide efforts to secure educational institutions.
Shettima’s delegation is accompanied by several top officials, including Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress; Dr. Bernard Doro, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction; Minister of Women Affairs Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim; and Zubaida Umar, Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency.
The Vice President’s visit follows a pre-dawn raid on Monday in which armed assailants stormed Government Girls Secondary School, Maga, abducting at least 25 students and killing the vice principal. Fortunately, one of the girls managed to escape, and security forces, alongside local hunters, are actively searching for the remaining victims.
This incident has further highlighted the persistent threat of banditry in northwestern Nigeria, intensifying calls for coordinated federal and state responses to protect communities and schools.
President Tinubu earlier expressed deep sorrow over both the abduction in Kebbi and the loss of Brigadier General Musa Uba and other soldiers in a separate attack in Borno State, describing the events as profoundly distressing.
