Nigeria’s vice-captain, William Troost-Ekong, has shed light on the tense moments that followed Victor Osimhen’s shocking last-minute miss in the World Cup playoff clash against Gabon.
With just seconds left in regulation time, Osimhen found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper—an opportunity many believed would seal the win. Instead, the chance slipped away, leaving the stadium frozen in disbelief.
Troost-Ekong, speaking to ESPN Africa, explained that the team wasted no time in lifting the striker’s spirits.
“The moment he broke free, I thought the goal was guaranteed,” Ekong said.
“But once it didn’t go in, our job was to keep him calm and remind him the game wasn’t over.”
The defender highlighted the squad’s togetherness, noting that their collective composure proved vital. Despite the missed opportunity, Nigeria regained control in extra time, ultimately securing the victory that pushed them into the playoff final.
According to Ekong, it was the team’s unity—not panic—that carried them through: “We stuck together, and that made the difference.”
