The Peoples Republic of China has kicked against the recent threat by the United States declare war on Nigeria on account of allegations of genocide targeted at Christians in the country.
Spokesperson of the China’s Foreign Ministry, Mao Ning said the US declaration of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern and subsequent threat of war amounted to an interference in Nigeria’s domestic affairs, expressing support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration
Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, Ning when asked to respond to the development in Nigeria said Trump’s actions were condemnable and unacceptable.
“As Nigeria’s comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people on the development path suited to its national conditions.
“China firmly opposes any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, and threatening other countries with sanctions and force,” she said.
President Donald Trump of the United States had last Friday named Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” following allegations that Christianity and Christians were facing an existential threat in Nigeria.
Trump warned that the U.S. will immediately cut off all assistance to Nigeria if the Nigerian government continues to allow the killing of Christians and will very likely launch military operations to take out the radical Islamists responsible for the attacks on Christian communities across the country.
However, the Federal Government of Nigeria through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the allegations do not reflect the true situation in Nigeria.
