Sanwo-Olu inaugurates 420 Homes in Ajara, Badagry

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday inaugurated 420 modern housing units at the newly completed Ajara Housing Estate, Badagry, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to bridging the housing gap across the State.

The Governor renamed the estate in honour of the late Sunny Akinsanya Ajose, former Lagos State Head of Service and a respected chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sanwo-Olu disclosed that the Ajara Estate is the 24th housing project completed and delivered by his administration in six years, emphasizing that 20 percent of the new homes would be allocated to members of the Medical Guild, the Nigerian Union of Teachers (Lagos Chapter), and other civil servants.

“This event marks the opening of the 24th housing estate brought to life by our administration, a major milestone on our path to creating a Greater Lagos,” the Governor said.

The Ajara Housing Scheme covers 18.9 hectares and consists of Phases I and II. Phase I, commissioned during the ceremony, comprises 35 blocks of 12-in-1 residential buildings, offering a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom semi-furnished apartments. Each unit is equipped with essential fittings, including kitchens, cabinets, and lighting fixtures.

Sanwo-Olu, who also led officials to perform the groundbreaking of Phase II, said the new development reflects the government’s dedication to ensuring Lagosians live in dignity and security.

“It fills me with great joy to see our vision coming to life, a Lagos where people live in dignity, work productively, and contribute to a 21st-century economy that benefits everyone.

“Around the globe, when citizens have dependable access to food, shelter, healthcare, education, and security, communities flourish. These are the aspirations that continue to guide our policies and programs in Lagos State.”. he said.

The Governor highlighted that the Ajara Housing Project generated over 1,300 direct and indirect jobs during its construction, and will create additional employment opportunities through facility management and estate services.

He noted that while the project was initiated by a previous administration, his government revitalized it with new purpose and energy, aligning it with the broader transformation of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway corridor.

“Just like every corner of our State, Badagry has benefited from targeted investments in road infrastructure, hospitals, schools, and other vital facilities

“These projects have opened up this historic town to the world, positioning it as a growing hub for eco-tourism, culture, and commerce.” he said.

Sanwo-Olu further revealed that over the past six years, 23 housing estates, delivering over 10,000 housing units have been completed across the five divisions of Lagos State.

He added that to make home ownership more accessible, the government plans to subsidize selling prices and offer rebates to public servants as appreciation for their service.

The Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, described the commissioning as both a “celebration of progress and a promise for the future.”

“Let us celebrate not only a new housing estate but also the opportunities it will bring, the lives it will touch and the brighter future it represents for generations to come,” he said.

Akinderu-Fatai expressed gratitude to the contractors, development partners, and the host community for their collaboration and support throughout the life of the project.
