Peter Obi Criticizes Tinubu’s Revenue Claims, Calls for Compassionate Leadership

Peter Obi has slammed President Tinubu for boasting about meeting revenue targets while retirees suffer from unpaid pensions and gratuities. He emphasized that revenue growth means little without improving the lives of Nigerians.

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has expressed strong concerns about President Tinubu’s recent claims regarding Nigeria’s revenue targets for 2025. Obi called out the government’s focus on revenue while the country faces widespread economic hardships, including unpaid pensions for retired public servants.

In a post on his verified social media account, Obi questioned the government’s commitment to improving the lives of ordinary Nigerians, highlighting how many people are still struggling despite the government’s revenue achievements. He pointed out that sectors crucial to Nigeria’s economy, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), are facing severe financial strain, with some even protesting over their inability to meet bank and staff obligations.

Obi further criticized the continued protest of retired public servants, including soldiers, who have yet to receive their pensions and gratuities. “Why are retired public servants, including soldiers who risked their lives for this nation, still protesting over unpaid benefits?” he asked. He described the situation as “shameful,” pointing out that those who have served the country and helped build its foundations should not be left begging for what they are owed.

The former Anambra State Governor emphasized that achieving revenue targets is meaningless if it does not translate into better lives for Nigerians. “A country that leaves its citizens in debt and despair is not one that truly cares for its people,” Obi said, calling for more responsible governance. He concluded with a message of hope: “A New Nigeria is possible if we act with integrity and compassion.”
