Libyan authorities in Tripoli have apprehended two Nigerian nationals accused of carrying out a string of robberies in the city. The arrest, confirmed by Migrant Rescue Watch on August 25, has drawn attention not just to crime but also to the growing vulnerability of undocumented migrants across North Africa.
Reports indicate that the two suspects, who were undocumented, had been linked to a series of break-ins at convenience stores where cash was stolen. Surveillance footage released earlier this week reportedly captured one of the incidents, eventually leading to their arrest.
“Migrant Rescue Watch confirmed that police in Tripoli arrested two undocumented Nigerians for multiple robberies and break-ins. The suspects had targeted shops and seized money. Their case has been handed over to the public prosecutor,” the group said.
The development underscores the risks faced by undocumented migrants in Libya, a country already struggling with internal instability and harsh migration policies. For many Nigerians seeking to transit through Libya to Europe, the line between survival and crime often blurs under pressure, leaving them vulnerable to both exploitation and arrest.
