Tinubu Meets Lula, Seeks Stronger Nigeria-Brazil Ties

President Bola Tinubu has met with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Brasília, calling for deeper cooperation in trade, energy, agriculture, and culture as both nations renew their historic ties.

President Bola Tinubu arrived in Brasília, Brazil, on Monday, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening ties with the South American nation. The visit was marked by a high-level meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, where both leaders discussed pathways for enhanced diplomatic and economic cooperation.

In a statement via his official X handle, President Tinubu described the talks as a renewal of the “historic relationship” between Nigeria and Brazil, underlining shared goals in agriculture, energy, trade, and cultural exchange.

“Today’s engagement marks the renewal of the historic relationship between Nigeria and Brazil. I look forward to working with President Lula to deepen cooperation in agriculture, energy, trade, and culture, towards building a future of shared prosperity across the Atlantic,” Tinubu said.

The Nigerian leader, who flew in from Los Angeles, was warmly received at the Brasília Air Base by senior Brazilian officials, including Ambassador Carlos Sérgio Sobral Duarte, Secretary for Africa and the Middle East, and Ambassador Carlos José Areias Moreno Garcete, Brazil’s envoy to Nigeria. Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, also joined the welcoming delegation.

Following his arrival, Tinubu was welcomed at his hotel by ministers, heads of government agencies, and private sector leaders. His itinerary in Brasília includes bilateral talks, the signing of memoranda of understanding, and an official welcoming ceremony at the Planalto Palace with full military honours. He will also pay a visit to Brazil’s National Congress.

The meeting with Lula is seen as a pivotal step in strengthening South-South cooperation, deepening economic ties, and opening new opportunities for collaboration across energy, agriculture, and trade sectors. It signals a broader diplomatic agenda by the Tinubu administration to leverage Nigeria’s international partnerships for domestic development.
