Brown Ideye Clears the Air After Misquoted Comment Sparks Backlash

Former Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye has debunked viral claims suggesting he called for broke ex-footballers to be jailed, stressing that his words were twisted out of context.

It started with a clip flying around on social media,  a short cut from Brown Ideye’s live chat. Before long, the internet had decided he was calling for retired players who ran out of money to be thrown in jail.

The former Nigerian striker, however, says that narrative is pure fiction.
According to him, he never advocated for punishment. His real concern has always been about how athletes can prepare for life after football.

“What I talked about was structure, education, and planning,” he explained. “At no point did I suggest prison for anyone. That’s not me.”

The 2013 AFCON winner pointed out that a football career doesn’t last forever, and many professionals get lost financially because nobody prepares them for what happens once the cheering stops.

His frustration wasn’t just with the misrepresentation but also with how quickly people ran with it without checking.
On X, he fired back: “School is not a scam. Learn to read and understand before reacting.”

Ideye insists his message to young players remains the same: save early, invest wisely, and surround yourself with mentors. “Even small amounts count when you start on time,” he said.

At the end of it all, the striker’s clarification is simple: he never wished jail time on broke ex-players — he’s pushing for better support systems to keep them from reaching that point in the first place.
