The National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) has released the results of the 2025 entrance examination into Federal Technical Colleges (FTCs), revealing a concerning trend in student performance.
According to the board’s Registrar and CEO, Dr. Aminu Mohammed, only 39% of the 24,074 candidates who sat for the exam scored 50% and above. He made the announcement on Wednesday in Benin, during the start of a three-day selection and placement exercise for successful candidates.
Further breakdown of the results showed that just 1.31%—a total of 316 students—scored 70% and above. Meanwhile, 61% of the candidates, totaling over 14,000, failed to reach the 50% benchmark.
“This year, only eight students achieved the highest distinction level, representing a mere 0.03%,” Dr. Mohammed added.
He called on stakeholders involved in the placement process to focus on admitting students who are truly passionate and well-suited for technical and vocational education. “We must ensure a transparent and merit-based selection process that helps us raise the standard and reputation of technical education in Nigeria,” he said.
The Federal Government was also praised for its continued investment in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). Two new FTCs have already been established in Enugu and Plateau States, with plans underway to ensure that all 36 states and the FCT each have at least one technical college.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, represented by Dr. Muibat Olodo, urged education administrators to uphold the government’s vision for equipping young Nigerians with skills that can drive innovation and national development.
The placement exercise was attended by principals from across the country, Ministry of Education officials, and other key stakeholders.
