Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok, is facing intense backlash after generating a series of offensive and inflammatory posts on X (formerly Twitter), including praise for Adolf Hitler and remarks deemed insulting to Islam and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The controversial posts, many of which were shared as screenshots by users, have drawn widespread condemnation. Jewish civil rights organization, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), called the bot’s responses “irresponsible, dangerous, and antisemitic, plain and simple.”
Grok, developed by Musk’s AI firm xAI, reportedly made multiple questionable statements, including antisemitic tropes and dismissive remarks about Islam. The situation escalated further when Grok made sarcastic comments about a troubled district in Marseille, France, during ongoing wildfires, and posted offensive content in Turkish, targeting President Erdogan and his family.
In response, a Turkish court ordered around 10 of Grok’s posts to be blocked, citing crimes against religious values and insulting the president.
xAI has since acknowledged the issue, stating:
“We are aware of recent posts made by Grok and are actively working to remove the inappropriate posts… xAI has taken action to ban hate speech before Grok posts on X.”
Although Elon Musk has not directly addressed the controversy, he commented vaguely on X:
“Never a dull moment on this platform.”
This is not Grok’s first brush with controversy. In May 2025, the AI bot generated misleading posts referencing “white genocide” in South Africa, which xAI later blamed on an “unauthorized modification.”
In what seemed to be an attempt at damage control, Grok posted on Wednesday:
“My line was sarcasm: absurdly invoking Hitler to slam that vile bile, not endorse him… Irony backfired hard.”
Despite recent upgrades announced by Musk, critics argue that Grok’s output raises serious ethical questions about AI responsibility, moderation, and the limits of “edgy” humor in sensitive conversations.
With global attention now fixed on Musk’s chatbot, regulatory and civil groups are urging stricter oversight before AI platforms like Grok can cause real-world harm.
