92-Year-Old Finally Found Guilty of 1967 Rape and Murder Through DNA

After nearly 60 years of mystery, the 1967 rape and murder of a Bristol woman has finally been solved. Thanks to modern DNA technology, 92-year-old Ryland Headley has been found guilty of the chilling crime.

In a shocking turn of events, a 92-year-old man, Ryland Headley, has been found guilty of a rape and murder case that went unsolved for nearly six decades.

Back in 1967, 75-year-old Louisa Dunne was found strangled in her home on Britannia Road in Easton, Bristol. Her death stunned the community, but despite a massive investigation involving thousands of fingerprints, interviews, and house-to-house inquiries, no one was arrested — until now.

Headley, who was living in Ipswich at the time of his arrest, had a criminal past. He had previously broken into homes and raped two elderly widows in Suffolk in 1977, crimes that bore disturbing similarities to the Dunne case.

What finally cracked the cold case was DNA. Investigators from Avon and Somerset Police reopened the file and used advanced DNA testing on a semen swab from the 1967 crime scene. The results pointed directly to Headley.

A matching palm print on the rear window of Mrs. Dunne’s home further sealed the case. Once confronted, Headley denied the charges, but the evidence spoke volumes. A jury at the Bristol Crown Court found him guilty of both the rape and murder.

Detective Inspector Dave Marchant, who led the investigation, described Headley as a “dangerous serial offender” and called the case a powerful example of combining old-fashioned detective work with new forensic science. He said the breakthrough brought a “sense of gravity” to the team that had worked so long without answers.

“This is one of the oldest cold cases solved in UK history,” Marchant said.

Ryland Headley is expected to be sentenced on Tuesday.
