Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has approved the supply of 15,716 desks and chairs to public primary schools across the 13 local government areas of the state.
This action comes in response to the poor learning conditions observed in many schools, where children are often seen sitting on bare floors or standing throughout lessons.
The Executive Chairman of the Nasarawa State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr Kassim Muhammed-Kassim, made this known while addressing journalists in Lafia. He revealed that the situation was uncovered during several unscheduled visits he made to schools.
According to him, the governor acted swiftly after being briefed about the dire conditions. The contract has been awarded, and delivery is expected to begin within a month.
Muhammed-Kassim said many classrooms lacked furniture completely, while others had broken chairs that left pupils sitting on scraps or by the wall. He expressed concern over how such conditions affected children’s ability to learn effectively.
“This is not just about comfort, it’s about the future of these children,” he said. “Our goal is to transform the image of public basic education in Nasarawa.”
The chairman emphasized that he would not sit behind a desk to effect change. Instead, he promised to remain in the field, actively monitoring schools to ensure real impact.
He thanked the governor for his support and affirmed that they were ready to rewrite the story of education in the state.
