Lesson for Nigeria as Philippines police orders officers to lose weight or lose job within one year

The police in the Philippines just dropped a weighty new rule — and it’s got people talking all over the world. Their new top cop, General Nicolas Torre III, has given officers just one year to get in shape or get kicked off the force. Yup, if you’re carrying extra belly fat, your badge might be the next thing you lose!

Now let’s flip this around for a second and talk Nigeria — because if there’s one place that could use a little shape-up energy, it’s our own security forces.

General Torre isn’t playing. He went on live radio and made it clear: every officer must lose excess weight, or it’s bye-bye uniform. They’re using a system that calculates your “ideal weight” based on your height, age, and sex — and if you’re more than 5kg over, you’re in trouble.

They’re not just targeting junior officers either. From the big bosses to street patrol, everybody’s on this fitness train.

And don’t think you can hide behind “I’m big-boned.” Torre said they’ll consider medical conditions, but you might still get sent to office duty or early retirement.

According to the PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo:

“If you’re going to wear the badge, you better look the part. Fit cops mean a disciplined force.”

Boom.

Let’s be honest, we’ve all seen some of our officers struggling to chase okada riders or breaking a sweat just standing at checkpoints. It’s no shade — it’s just facts.

We need our police and security officers to be sharp, fit, and ready. Not huffing and puffing after 30 seconds of action.

Imagine a Nigeria Police Force where the officers can chase down a suspect without gasping for breath, look professional and confident in their uniform, and earn respect not just for their badge, but for the energy they bring to their work. Does that sound like a dream? The Philippines is already making it a reality.

A fitness push like this in Nigeria would not only boost the performance of the police but also improve public trust. People respect what looks respectable. A strong, healthy force commands attention — and results.

So here’s a little challenge to our leaders in uniform:

Na only the Philippines sabi fit? Abi we no like better thing?

Let’s swap the big bellies for better boots. Because a fit force is a fierce force — and Nigeria deserves nothing less.
