The Edo State House of Assembly has approved a ₦100 billion loan request from Governor Monday Okpebholo to fast-track major infrastructure projects across the state.

The request, sent through the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Ikhilor, was read during the Assembly sitting on Tuesday. It explained that the loan will be sourced from First Bank Nigeria Plc to support contractor financing for development works.

According to the letter, the fund will back critical infrastructure needed to boost transportation, improve living standards, and drive economic growth in Edo. The move falls under the governor’s SHINE Development Framework, focused on upgrading urban areas and creating job opportunities for citizens.

Lawmakers at the Committee of the Whole gave unanimous support for the loan, noting its potential to transform the state’s physical landscape and support ongoing projects.

Speaker Blessing Agbebaku has directed the Clerk to forward the approval resolution to the governor for immediate implementation.

In a related move, the Assembly also passed a bill to establish the St. Matthew Royal College of Nursing Science in Edenu-Irrua, a step aimed at strengthening healthcare education in the state.
