FG Closes Terrorism Case Against Nnamdi Kanu After Presenting Five Witnesses

The Federal Government has officially closed its terrorism case against Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), at the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Facing an eight-count terrorism charge, the prosecution concluded its case after presenting its fifth witness, Mr EEE, an officer from the Department of State Services (DSS). Though he had never met Kanu personally, he confirmed familiarity with him via media.

Mr EEE testified that he led a security team into southern Nigeria to collect information related to the EndSARS protests (2020–2021), documenting tragic figures: 128 police officers, 37 army personnel, and 10 DSS operatives killed; also, 164 police stations and 19 INEC offices destroyed.

However, under cross-examination, he admitted he was not directly involved in investigating crimes allegedly tied to Kanu and had no clear knowledge of IPOB’s involvement in protests in cities like Lagos, Ibadan, or Ile-Ife. He was also unaware of the Lagos State Judicial Panel findings on EndSARS, which didn’t implicate IPOB.

With Mr EEE’s testimony complete, the prosecution, represented by Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, told the court they had sufficiently established their case. Defence counsel Kanu Agabi, SAN, responded by filing a no-case submission, requesting 14 days—from June 24—to prepare their argument.

Justice James Omotosho granted the motion, also granting the prosecution 14 days to respond. The matter has been slated for July 18, 2025, when written addresses on the no-case submission will be adopted.
