Liverpool Crush Spurs to Clinch 20th League Title, Matching Man United’s Record

Liverpool delivered a dominant display to seal their 20th English top-flight title — pulling level with Manchester United’s historic record — as they thrashed Tottenham Hotspur in an unforgettable afternoon at Anfield.

Needing just a single point to confirm their Premier League triumph, Arne Slot’s men fell behind early when former Liverpool striker Dominic Solanke stunned Anfield with a header. But the scare only lit a fire under the home side, who responded ruthlessly to wrap up the title in spectacular fashion.

Luis Díaz equalized after 16 minutes, tapping in Dominik Szoboszlai’s cross — a goal awarded after a brief VAR check for offside. The comeback gathered momentum quickly as Alexis Mac Allister unleashed a brilliant strike from the edge of the box to give Liverpool the lead, sparking wild celebrations across the stands.

Just before halftime, Cody Gakpo added a third, expertly turning inside the penalty area to slot past Spurs keeper Guglielmo Vicario, putting the result beyond doubt before the interval.

Liverpool were relentless after the break, especially in front of the Kop. Mohamed Salah added a fourth, cutting inside with trademark precision to score his 185th Premier League goal — a landmark that moves him above Sergio Agüero as the highest-scoring foreign player in league history. Only four Englishmen now sit ahead of the Egyptian in the all-time list.

The celebrations grew louder when Salah forced Destiny Udogie into an own goal just minutes later, adding to Tottenham’s misery as Liverpool turned the match into a carnival of goals.

The victory meant Liverpool could finally celebrate a league title in front of a packed Anfield for the first time since 1990 — their 2020 triumph coming during Covid-19 restrictions behind closed doors.

Manager Arne Slot, who succeeded Jurgen Klopp last summer, paid an emotional tribute to his predecessor after the final whistle.

“It feels amazing,” Slot said on LFCTV. “But today, it’s all about showing appreciation to Jurgen Klopp. The foundation he and Pep Lijnders built — the work ethic, the quality, the culture — it was outstanding.”

Slot even led a chorus of Klopp’s farewell anthem, changing the lyrics in honor of the legendary German coach.

Reflecting on the journey, Slot told Sky Sports, “At the start of the season, qualifying for the Champions League would have been a success. But credit to the players — they showed they were capable of so much more.”

On a day heavy with emotion and glory, Liverpool not only reclaimed their crown — they sent a clear message: they are back at the summit of English football.
