Food security: Uzo-uwani council Boss Assures Farmers of protection

Following the recent attack on farmers in Uzo-uwani local Government Area,the council Boss, Hon.Barr.Chijioke Ezugwu has reiterated his commitment to collaborate with all the Community Leaders, Stakeholders, security operatives and other community policing agents to increase safer access to farmlands.

He said, now that the rainy season had begun, farmers were particularly vulnerable because their lands were mostly isolated and they were soft target for criminals and suspected herders.

Barr Ezugwu Stated this on Monday, April 08, 2025, during a security awareness visit to communities in Uzo-uwani Local Government Area with the CSO of Enugu Government House.

Addressing the gathering in the various communities, the Chairman noted that he has directed security operatives to take charge of all the surrounding bushes and farms so that farmers can safely cultivate in their lands and also said they’ll ruthlessly deal with some of the miscreants harbouring around its environs.

“Farming is very important to all of us, food security is the worst form of insecurity. Therefore, we will not allow food insecurity to surface in this part where we have started to witness a substantial return of peace and stability.”

Ezugwu reassured the farmers of the government’s commitments to improving security around farmlands by using local security operatives to protect farmers from the unwarranted attacks.

He called on all citizens to be resilient and conscious of the happenings around them and to report any suspicious activity or movement to security operatives. He implored and equally urged all Communities to fully support and cooperate with members of the Nigerian Police, Military Neighborhood watch and other security agencies.

Highlighting government’s efforts in addressing insecurity in the local Government, the Chairman thanked the Governor,His Excellency, Gov.Mbah for providing 5 Al enabled patrol vehicles and deployment of more police officers.

His words, “I thank the Governor of Enugu state,His Excellency , Dr Peter Mbah for his efforts in security in Enugu state particularly our local Government Area, the Governor wants the farmers to have assurance that they are safe and that their farms are safe as well. We must work collaboratively to enhance government efforts. We must return to farm.We are not going to leave our lands for miscreants,” he concluded.

The Chairman noted that security operatives have started bush combing and government has taken a decisive step in bringing this to a stop, he further warned that nobody should engage in any protest, pleading that people should not be instigated into creating panic and fear.
