The wife of a former Head of Service (HoS) in Rivers State, Florence Nwaeke, has raised concerns over the safety and whereabouts of her husband, George Nwaeke, following his resignation from office.
Speaking to journalists late Friday, Mrs. Nwaeke expressed fear and distress over her husband’s sudden silence and an online interview he purportedly granted, which she claimed appeared suspicious.
“When he got to Abuja, he called that he had landed. I said, ‘Thank God,’” she recounted. However, she later stumbled upon an interview attributed to him, which she insisted did not seem genuine.
“I said, ‘That is not my husband. That is not my husband,’” she declared, expressing deep concern over the circumstances surrounding the interview.
According to Mrs. Nwaeke, her repeated efforts to reach her husband have been futile, as his phone lines are no longer connecting. She revealed that she had sent frantic messages to him, asking, “Are you under duress? Have they kidnapped you? Talk to me now. Why are you not talking to me?” but received no response.
Visibly distressed, she pleaded with Nigerians for help. “Oh, Jesus, help me. Nigerians, help me. My husband is in trouble. My husband is in trouble. My husband is in trouble. Look at the message I sent to him. I said, ‘Daddy, why? Were you in hostage?’” she lamented.
Her outcry comes on the heels of explosive allegations made by her husband against the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara. In the interview that sparked her concerns, George Nwaeke accused Fubara of backing Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed for the 2027 presidential election and of inciting militants to attack oil facilities in the state. He also alleged that the governor ordered the bombing of the Rivers State House of Assembly in 2023 to prevent his impeachment.
In addition to her appeal to the public, Mrs. Nwaeke directly called on Governor Fubara to intervene. “Governor, help me. My husband is in trouble. He is in trouble,” she pleaded, claiming her husband had resigned under duress.
In response, Governor Fubara dismissed the claims, suggesting that Nwaeke had been compromised. “The truth is that Dr. Nwaeke has been compromised, and whatever he is saying is only aimed at fulfilling his promise to those who may have paid or coerced him to lie against me,” Fubara stated in a late Friday release.
The governor further backed his defense by sharing screenshots of alleged conversations between Nwaeke and his Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie, in which the former HoS reportedly solicited financial assistance.
As the controversy unfolds, concerns over Nwaeke’s well-being continue to mount, leaving Nigerians waiting for clarity on his actual condition and the authenticity of the statements attributed to him.
