Rivers Crisis: Fubara Moves to Reconcile with Pro-Wike Lawmakers, Calls for Meeting

The political standoff in Rivers State has taken a dramatic twist as Governor Siminalayi Fubara has extended an olive branch to the 27 lawmakers loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The governor, in a letter issued on Sunday by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, invited the faction led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule to a crucial meeting slated for Monday, March 10, 2025.
The invitation comes on the heels of Fubara’s receipt of the Certified True Copy of the Supreme Court judgment, which has further shaped the political dynamics in the state. The move is widely seen as an attempt to de-escalate tensions and create a framework for legislative cooperation, following months of fierce political rivalry.
According to the letter, key agenda items for discussion include the provision of a designated space for the House of Assembly’s sittings, the settlement of outstanding remuneration and allowances of the lawmakers, and the presentation of the 2025 budget.
“In furtherance of His Excellency’s promise stated in my letter dated March 5, 2025, and in light of the Supreme Court judgment, I hereby invite you and your colleagues—Honourable members of the Rivers State House of Assembly—to a meeting to discuss the way forward,” the letter read in part.
While some political analysts interpret the move as a strategic retreat by Fubara in the ongoing power tussle, others view it as a calculated step to mend fences and stabilize governance in the state.
The meeting is scheduled to take place at 10 a.m. on Monday at the Government House in Port Harcourt, setting the stage for what could be a decisive moment in the unfolding political drama.
Observers will be keenly watching the outcome of this engagement, as it could determine the future of governance in Rivers State and the fragile relationship between the governor and the pro-Wike faction of the House.
