Hold onto your smartphones, folks! The digital streets are buzzing, and it’s not just the latest dance challenge causing the commotion. Our very own BBNaija alumna, Princess Francis, has taken to the ‘gram to vent about the soaring costs of staying connected.
In a candid Instagram Story on Wednesday, February 26, Princess didn’t mince words: “If person continues dey buy data like this, to prosper go hard oh.” Translation? “At this rate, buying data will make it tough to get ahead.” And honestly, can we blame her?
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently gave the green light for a 50% hike in telecom tariffs, shaking up our digital budgets. Telecom giants like MTN Nigeria and Airtel have already rolled out their new pricing plans. For instance, MTN’s 1.8GB monthly plan now sets you back N1,500, a jump from the previous 1.5GB for N1,000.
Airtel isn’t far behind. A quick check using the *312# code or a visit to their website reveals the updated data bundles. Subscribers aren’t exactly thrilled, with some expressing their frustrations online. One user lamented, “Life is already hard for us and you decided to add more to it by being heartless.”
This price surge comes after over a decade of telecom operators lobbying for adjustments to match economic realities. The NCC’s approval means that, starting January 2025, we’re seeing these changes in action.
So, what’s the vibe? With data costs climbing, many are rethinking their online habits. Whether it’s cutting back on streaming, limiting social media scrolls, or hunting for Wi-Fi hotspots, Nigerians are adapting to this new digital landscape.
Stay savvy, stay connected, and maybe think twice before that next meme binge.
