The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has said there was no national grid collapse on Wednesday.
General Manager, Public Affairs, TCN, Ndidi Mbah clarified this in a statement.
The statement was titled: Restoration of Omotosho-Ikeja West 330KV transmission line after tripping.
Mbah said: “The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) wishes to clarify that at 11:34 hours today, the Omotosho-Ikeja West 330kV transmission line tripped at the Omotosho end. At the time, the Benin-Egbin 330kV line was on a scheduled outage for mechanical line tracing.
“The tripping resulted in a cascaded outage affecting the Lagos, Abuja, and Osogbo axis. However all other parts of the grid remained unaffected, contrary to reports of a grid collapse in the media.
“The line has been successfully restored, and normal power supply has been fully restored to the affected areas.
“We assure Nigerians of our commitment to efficient delivery of bulk power across the nation as we continue to implement measures to enhance the stability of the national grid.”
Lagos State and the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT) Abuja, were thrown into power outage.
The outage was confirmed by the Head, Corporate Communications, Ikeja Electric Plc, (IE) Mr. Kingsley Okotie and General Manager, Corporate Communications and Strategies, Eko Electric, Mr. Babatunde Lasaki, ,in separate interviews with New Telegraph.
Lasaki also confirmed that areas within the coverage area of Eko Electric were affected by the outage.
He said: “We lost supply across our network areas at about 11.35am today . 12th February.”
Okotie also said that areas within Ikeja Electric’s coverage were affected by the blackout.
IE in a public notice by its management, also notified its customers of the outage.
The statement read: “Dear Esteemed Customer, please be informed that we experienced a system outage today, 12th February, 11:34 hrs affecting all our feeders.
“Restoration of supply is ongoing in collaboration with our critical stakeholders. Kindly bear with us.”
Abuja Electric Distribution Company (AEDC) also confirmed the outage via its X handle.
The post read: “Dear Valued Customer, We regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 am today causing a power outage across our franchise areas.
“While the gradual restoration of power supply has commenced, please be assured that we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid is stabilised. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to serve you better.”
But the spokesperson of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, (EEDC) Mr. Emeka Ezeh said his DisCos’ area of coverage were not affected by the outage.
Sources also said that areas covered by Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company were not affected by the blackout.
