Pep Guardiola has denied that Manchester City spent heavily in January in anticipation of a potential transfer embargo due to alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules.
City invested approximately £170 million ($211 million) on players Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis, and Nico Gonzalez before Monday’s transfer deadline. These signings are essential reinforcements for a team that is currently struggling in the Premier League and has only just qualified for the Champions League play-offs.
When asked if the club’s significant spending was influenced by the possibility of facing a transfer ban, Guardiola indicated that he is waiting for the outcome of the hearing regarding 115 alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations, which is expected in the coming weeks. If found guilty, City could face several sanctions including a transfer embargo, fines, point deductions, or even demotion. The club denies any wrongdoing.
Guardiola expressed that his club is often misjudged due to the wealth of its owners, stating that their spending does not equate to that of their rivals. “In the last five years, we have been the lowest in net spending among the top six teams,” he said. “Even after this transfer window, we still fall behind Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham, and even Liverpool.”
He explained that the disparity is largely due to the high number of player sales in recent seasons. Despite the ongoing conversations about the club’s finances, he emphasized, “Respect the other teams, but in a month, I believe there will be a verdict and a sentence, after which I will share my thoughts on what has transpired. Ultimately, every club has the freedom to operate as they see fit.”
