A tragic incident has shaken the Ghanaian community in Canada after 23-year-old Alfred Okyere, a student who relocated to Canada just four months ago, was stabbed to death by a co-worker at his new job.
Alfred had recently started working part-time at DSI Underground Canada, a mining supply company, to support himself while staying with his elder sister, Lydia Obeng. The alleged attacker, 53-year-old Troy Francis Leclair, is now facing murder charges.
According to Alfred’s sister, the police reported that the young man was stabbed 17 times during an altercation that lasted just 30 seconds. “I know Alfred is very calm. He’s not troublesome. It was a new job he told me about, and he had only started last Wednesday,” Lydia explained in an interview with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
On the day of the incident, Alfred left for work after informing his sister about his schedule. Hours later, police arrived at Lydia’s home to deliver the heartbreaking news.
“When the police broke the news, I couldn’t believe it until they brought me his bag. I packed his lunch for him that morning,” Lydia said, still in disbelief
The police confirmed Alfred suffered severe stab wounds and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. “Upon arrival, police located a 23-year-old male victim suffering from stab wounds,” the statement read.
Lydia and her family say they are yet to receive full details about the circumstances surrounding Alfred’s death. The news has left them devastated, with Lydia describing her brother as peaceful and hardworking.
Meanwhile, the suspect, Leclair, has been charged with murder and is in police custody as investigations continue.
