The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), in partnership with other security agencies, has apprehended 90 foreign nationals in Rivers State for their alleged involvement in cybercrime activities. The Rivers State Comptroller of NIS, Y.I. Abdulmajeed, disclosed the arrests in an official statement issued on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.
Abdulmajeed explained that the operation was launched following credible intelligence reports, which led authorities to a location believed to be a hub for cybercriminal operations targeting unsuspecting Nigerians. The raid resulted in the detention of 94 suspects, including 85 Cameroonians, five Chadians, and four Nigerians. Among those arrested, 74 are male and 20 are female.
During the operation, it was discovered that all 90 foreign nationals had entered Nigeria illegally through unauthorized border crossings. None of them possessed valid residence permits or travel documents. The operation also led to the arrest of two Nigerian landlords, who are accused of providing accommodation to the suspects and enabling their illegal activities.
“This operation underscores our dedication to protecting Nigeria’s borders and ensuring that individuals residing within the country comply with immigration laws,” Abdulmajeed stated. He emphasized the NIS’s commitment to collaborating with other security agencies to address threats to national security.
The Comptroller General of the NIS, Kemi Nandap, has ordered a thorough and swift investigation into the case to ensure that those involved face appropriate legal action. The NIS reiterated its determination to clamp down on illegal migration and cybercrime, both of which pose significant risks to the nation’s security and economy.
This operation highlights the importance of vigilance in combating cybercrime and illegal immigration. The NIS has called on members of the public to report suspicious activities to relevant authorities, reinforcing the collective responsibility of safeguarding Nigeria’s stability and integrity.
