Estate Surveyors’ Institution Urges Members to Uphold Loyalty, Discipline

The Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV) has urged its newly inducted members to prioritize loyalty, discipline, and adherence to ethical standards as they embark on their professional careers.

Speaking during the induction ceremony held on Tuesday in Abuja, the President and Chairman of the Council, Victor Alonge, highlighted the importance of upholding the institution’s core values. He reminded the inductees of the ethical and professional responsibilities they now bear, emphasizing that their conduct would shape the reputation of the profession.

Alonge congratulated the new associates, commending their dedication and perseverance in fulfilling the stringent requirements of the institution. He encouraged them to remain committed to continuous learning and excellence in their field, positioning themselves as credible and reliable estate surveyors and valuers in Nigeria.

“That you are here today to be inducted as associate members of the Institution is a result of your determination, resolve, and hard work in the last two or more years,” Alonge said.

He highlighted the importance of adhering to the institution’s values, stressing the need for discipline and loyalty.

“As new Inductees, a major part of your obligation to the Institution is full loyalty to the Institution and to the leadership. Also required of you is decorum and strict adherence to professional ethics and conduct. Your actions and conduct will affect the entire members, positively or negatively,” he said.

The president called on the new members to align themselves with the institution’s Code of Ethics and Constitution, which form the foundation for maintaining the integrity of the profession.

“The hallmark of every professional organization, including ours, is discipline and good conduct. I therefore enjoin you to abide by the rules and regulations of the Institution as contained in our Constitution and Code of Ethics,” he stated.

He encouraged the new associates to seek guidance from their sponsors—seasoned members who play a key role in their professional development.

“I urge you to seek advice from your sponsors on all professional issues, while I call on your sponsors to play the expected role of mentoring the candidates they sponsored in their professional development,” Alonge said.

“Estate Surveyors and Valuers must keep tabs on current industry trends and seek a full understanding of the emerging technical skills sought after in the industry. We must keep updating our skills to be able to practice according to ethics and standards,” he advised.

Addressing the about 681 inductees, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance, and Other Financial Institutions, Senator Mikhail Abiru emphasized the need for professionals in the estate surveying and valuation sector to develop skills of excellence in a rapidly changing world.

“The intersection of technology, finance, and property valuation is evolving in ways that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago,” he said.

He further stressed that “Innovation and digital transformation are reshaping industries across the globe. And we invest in industries of course with no exception.”
