A student of Obada Idi-Emi High School in Imeko Afon Local Government Area, Ogun State, known as Ariyo, tragically lost his life after allegedly being subjected to 162 strokes of the cane by a teacher.
The incident, shared on social media by activist Adetoun on Friday, reportedly began when the teacher brought a dustbin to Ariyo’s class, instructing students not to break it. Ariyo’s joking remark about the dustbin being purchased with students’ funds allegedly angered the teacher, who then reported him to the principal.
Following the principal’s directive, the teacher reportedly flogged Ariyo severely, during which Ariyo collapsed. Adetoun further claimed that there was a delay in getting Ariyo medical attention, and he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
A senior police officer confirmed the incident, noting that police intervention was required to manage the tension it sparked in the community.
“We are on the matter, the incident wanted to create tension but we were able to douse the tension,” the police source said.
As of the time of filing this report, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command had yet to respond to enquiries on the incident sent to her line.
