Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, has finally surrendered to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after facing mounting pressure and several court orders. Bello’s media office confirmed on Wednesday, September 18, that he complied with the EFCC’s invitation following consultations with his family, legal team, and political allies.
The decision came after Justice Emeka Nwite adjourned Bello’s money laundering case to September 25. The EFCC has charged Bello with a 19-count indictment involving ₦80 billion in alleged money laundering. Despite these charges, Bello had previously avoided questioning and missed court appearances.
In a statement, Bello’s media office highlighted his respect for the rule of law and his intention to clear his name. The statement also noted that during his tenure, Bello implemented anti-corruption measures, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s anti-corruption initiatives.
Bello was accompanied by notable figures during his surrender to the EFCC. His team has expressed hope that the EFCC will conduct a thorough and fair investigation while respecting his rights as a Nigerian citizen. Further details about his interactions with the EFCC are expected to be released soon.
