Maiduguri flood: UN pledges to work with Bormo to provide sustainable solutions

The united Nations (,UN), Resident Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr. Mohammed Fail has said that the UN will not spare it’s resources in not only  providing humanitarian assistance but durable longer and sustainable solutions that Will forestall future occurrence of flooding

The UN Resident Humanitarian Coordinator, disclosed this when he ked a delegation to  pay a solidarity and sympathy visto to Governor Babagana Zulum of Bormo state at the Government House, maiduguri on Saturday.

“We are coming at a time when Bormo state is facing one of its worse flood, I was told in the last 3 decades. Your Excellency, you know what UN stands, my personal stands for Bormo and each of my delegation stands, if there is any place where uN deploy it’s staff, it’s hearts and it’s resources is Bormo”, Mr Fal said.

The uN coordinator said: “We don’t have any other undertaking than to come together to express our solidarity and sympathy with you and the  people of Bormo state, we are not here for solidarity and sympathy only but to translate our words into action.  I know the action has started .as we speaks we  must mobilize resources to o step up our intervention.”

He said the UN through united Nations Development Program (UNDP will work with the Bormo state government and other stakeholders to produce comprehensive assessment and  data towards providing sustainable response and durable and sustainable solutions to farestall future flooding.

In his response, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno state said the flood was massive as it has affected more than one third of the city where bridges, University of Maiduguri Teaching hospital, State specialist hospital, roads public building, houses business Centres schools and there is  need for collaborative effort and partnership with UN, international and national Non Governmental organization, cooperate organisations and  individual in  providing immediate, medium  and  long term interventions.

“Borno state has faced a lot of trails in the last 100 years, 1898 to 1904 we had Rabeh invasion we faced serous drought in 1914, locus invasion in 1944, Maitatsine in 1981, flood in 1994, Boko Haram in n 2009  and now another flood”, Zulum said.

According to the Governor, the flood disaster has destroyed many houses, shops, schools, hospitals bridges, roads and  above all many lives  were lost and called for the UN, international and national Non  Governmental organization to support the state to provide immediate, medium and long term  support to the victims.

He commended the uN, Secretary, General, the Deputy Secretary General, Mrs Amina Mohammed, the resident coordinator, the German embassy and other donor partners for their humanitarian support to the victims of Boko Haram insurgency and flood.

Meanwhile the Yobe state Governor, Mai Mala Buni has also paid a sympathy card solidarity visit to  Governor Babagana Zulum and donated N1000 million  and personal donate of foods items worth millions of Naira  to the victims of the flood.

While sympathizing with the government and people of Borno state at the Government House, Maiduguri, Governor Buni said Borno and Yobe are sisters, what affects Borno also   affects Yobe state, as the the two states shares comme culture,tribe and geographical locations.

He said: “I could not come earlier because I was also busy  receiving delegations coming to sympathize with me and the people of Yobe over the Mafa massacre where many people were killed by the Boko Haram insurgency”.

He prayed that God in His infinite mercey the souls of those who lost their live Janatul Fiddaus and replenish those we ho lost their property in the disaster.

Responding, Governor Babagana Zulum thanked Governor Buni and the people of Yobe state for the visit and support and that the support of the Yobe people to the victims of the flood will not go unnoticed.
