Delta CP Criticizes Ineffective Security Trust Fund

The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, has voiced concerns regarding the non-functional state of the Security Trust Fund in Delta. He highlighted this issue while addressing members of the CLEEN Foundation during their visit to the police headquarters in Asaba, the state capital, on Tuesday evening.

Olufemi emphasized the importance of the Security Trust Fund in enhancing law enforcement capabilities and ensuring a safer environment for the people of Delta State. He urged the relevant stakeholders to take swift action to revive the fund, stressing that its revitalization is crucial for providing the necessary resources to tackle security challenges effectively.

He said, “I have reviewed the CLEEN Foundation’s charter of demands, and as far as I am concerned, there is no functional Security Trust Fund in the state.

“What exists is merely an office building; it is not operational, and there is nothing to demonstrate the presence of a functional Security Trust Fund in the state.”

Regarding state security, CP Olufemi stressed that Delta State remains one of the safest states in Nigeria.

“I can confirm that Delta has consistently been ranked among the safest states in Nigeria due to the diligence and commitment of officers, combined with the active involvement of communities in providing timely intelligence,” he added.

Olufemi expressed satisfaction with the current security situation in Delta State, emphasizing the positive impact of law enforcement efforts and cooperation from local communities. He highlighted how the peaceful environment has bolstered commerce and tourism, making the state more attractive to investors compared to others.

The police commissioner assured the public that officers are working tirelessly to ensure swift justice, and he emphasized the importance of ongoing collaboration between the public and security agencies in maintaining peace. He urged residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities, acknowledging the vital role public cooperation plays in crime prevention.

However, he pointed out challenges law enforcement faces in certain areas, particularly due to non-compliance by some citizens. He called on the CLEEN Foundation to review and enhance its support for the police force nationwide.

Earlier, Mr. Chucks Okpunor, Delta State Coordinator of the CLEEN Foundation Observatory Group, in partnership with the MacArthur Foundation, discussed the purpose of the visit. He emphasized the need for improvements in transparency and accountability in enforcing the Nigeria Police Act 2020, the ACJA 2015, the National Security Strategy 2019, and other human rights protection laws.

Okpunor also noted the group’s efforts to engage with the police, correctional services, and the state Ministry of Justice in advocating for reforms to strengthen Delta State’s criminal justice system.
