Nigeria’s power generation has reached a three-year high of 5,313MW, according to Minister of Power, Mr. Adebayo Adelabu.
In a statement from his Special Adviser on Strategic Communication and Media Relations, Mr. Bolaji Tunji, Adelabu emphasized the need for Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to increase their energy intake to prevent grid instability. He warned that if power produced is not utilized by the DisCos, it could lead to a grid collapse due to a drop in frequency.
The Minister also highlighted ongoing efforts to encourage industries to purchase bulk energy.
Earlier this year, in May, the federal government committed to generating 6,000 megawatts of electricity by the end of 2024. During a recent ministerial address in Abuja, Adelabu noted that power generation had reached 5,000MW as of May 3. He expressed confidence that Nigeria would achieve the 6,000MW target by the end of the year, given the sector’s improvements in 2023.
