Oba of Benin Awards Royal Plaque to Rema

Afrobeats superstar Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has been honored with a royal plaque by Oba Ewuare II, the Oba of Benin. The prestigious award was presented to Rema on Thursday during his visit to the Oba’s palace, which coincided with his homecoming concert at Ogbe Stadium in Benin City.

This royal accolade came after Rema participated in the groundbreaking ceremony for the Edo Arena on Wednesday. During the event, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki announced that the new 6,000-capacity arena would be named ‘Rema Dome’ in recognition of the artist’s significant contributions to promoting Edo State on a global scale.

Rema, who hails from Benin City, has consistently celebrated his Edo roots through his music. As a proud ambassador of Edo State, he has played a key role in promoting the cultural heritage of the ancient Benin Kingdom both nationally and internationally.

His latest hit single, “Benin Boys,” featuring fellow Edo-born artist Shallipopi, pays homage to his hometown. In the song, Rema confidently states that he deserves royal recognition from the Oba for his efforts in elevating the Benin Kingdom through his music.
