Kano school pupils forced to share classrooms with animals

More than 500 students at Government Junior Secondary School, Karfi, in the Takai Local Government Area of Kano State, are reportedly forced to share their learning space with animals.

This dire situation has arisen due to the severe deterioration of the school’s infrastructure, including the collapse of classroom roofs following recent strong winds.

The damaged classrooms have created an unsafe and unsanitary environment that not only disrupts the students’ learning but also poses a significant risk to their health and safety.

Alarming photos shared by Monitng, a prominent civic tech platform, on X (formerly Twitter), show animals freely roaming alongside students in the overcrowded and dilapidated classrooms.

“SHOCKING!! Dear Gov @Kyusufabba. This is the DILAPIDATED state of Government Junior Sec School, Karfi, Takai LGA, Kano State, where students share a classroom with animals. Over 523 students are forced to learn in this deplorable condition after strong winds blew off the roof,” Monitng tweeted, drawing attention to the crisis.

Nigeria is currently grappling with a severe education crisis. With 18 million children out of school and countless others at risk of dropping out, the issue of inadequate educational facilities is widespread. Across the country, many schools are struggling with similar problems of dilapidated infrastructure, lack of essential resources, and overcrowded classrooms.

This is not an isolated incident. Last month, SaharaReporters highlighted a similar situation at the LEA primary school in Kigbe, Abuja, where 96 students were found sitting on the floor due to a lack of seating. Monitng also brought this to public attention, urging immediate action from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, and FCT Senator, Ireti Kingibe.

In a tweet, Monitng stated, “Dear @GovWike & @IretiKingibe Inside Abuja School Where Pupils Sit On Bare Floor. A local authority school located in LEA primary school Kigbe community Kwali Area Council FCT Abuja. Where over 96 pupils sit on bare floors in their classrooms to learn.”

These incidents underscore the urgent need for government intervention to address the deteriorating state of educational facilities across Nigeria. Without immediate and substantial investment in school infrastructure, the future of countless Nigerian children remains uncertain.
