Security forces in Abuja have detained freelance journalist Ayoola Babalola and several protesters amid ongoing demonstrations against poor governance and economic hardship in Nigeria.
The arrests occurred as protesters gathered at the MKO Abiola National Stadium on the third day of nationwide protests that began on Thursday. Babalola, who reported his detention via WhatsApp, was apprehended shortly after security operatives, believed to be from the Department of State Services (DSS), fired shots at the crowd, including journalists.
A correspondent from PUNCH narrowly escaped the gunfire, which left a Premium Times journalist’s car riddled with bullets.
“I’ve been arrested, comrades. I’m being held at Wuye Police Station. We are standing our ground and not releasing our devices,” Babalola, a former reporter for Peoples Gazette, posted on his WhatsApp status. He mentioned being detained with six others, including Samuel Victor. “They are taking our phones and taking us to the cell now,” he added in a message sent around 2 pm.
Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed that she was working to secure the release of those detained. “I’m only aware of two of them, not seven, and I’m making efforts on their release. I’m looking for the journalist, Ayoola Babalola,” she told PUNCH.
Protests have continued across Lagos, Oyo, Abuja, and other states, demanding the reversal of fuel subsidy removal and addressing the rising cost of living. However, the demonstrations have been marred by reports of looting, particularly in Kano and other northern regions. Police have been active in recovering stolen items and apprehending those responsible.
The Lagos State Government has urged protesters to return home, assuring them that their grievances have been heard. “Your voices have been heard loud and clear,” stated Gbenga Omotoso, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, in an interview with Channels TV.
The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized President Bola Tinubu for his silence amid the protests. In a statement, National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba called on Tinubu to address the nation and reassure citizens on pressing issues.
