The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has confirmed the deaths of three construction workers after a building collapsed at Arowojobe Estate in the Maryland area of the state.
Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency’s Permanent Secretary, released a statement confirming the incident, stating that it occurred at No 13, Wilson Mba Street, Arowojobe Estate, Maryland, Lagos.
According to the statement, the agency received a distress call about the collapsed building at around 3:49 am. The agency’s response team was immediately activated and arrived at the scene by 3:58 am, where they discovered that a set of three terraces under construction had collapsed.
Search and rescue operations began promptly, resulting in the recovery of three deceased adult males and the rescue of two alive male adults. Additionally, one adult male who was trapped under the rubble was successfully rescued.
The rescued individuals received pre-hospital care on location, and the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit has been contacted for the remains of the deceased workers.
A combined team including agency personnel, fire service, and Nigeria Police are currently working at the scene, with LASEMA’s excavator deployed to expedite the search and rescue operations.
“All the six men were site workers,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
“They are receiving pre-hospital care on location while the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit has been contacted for the remains of the three fatalities.
“A combined team of agency personnel, fire service and Nigeria Police are working at the scene.
“LASEMA’s excavator has been deployed to accelerate the search and rescue operations.”
