A section of a two-storey residential building in Kubwa, Abuja, collapsed on Saturday morning, trapping several people in the rubble.
The building, located beside the popular Cupid Hotel on Cupid Road (Sultan Dasuki Way), was formerly the Al-Hilal Hotel. It had later been converted into a hospital and then into residential apartments.
Emergency responders and security personnel promptly arrived at the scene. However, rescue efforts were hampered as cranes needed for the operation had not arrived nearly two hours after the incident, around 8:45 am.
It was reported that two individuals were rushed to a nearby hospital, while a few others managed to escape on their own.
One of the escapees recounted waking up around 7 am and hearing cracking sounds, prompting her to run out of the building.
Security operatives are on site to maintain order and assist in the ongoing rescue mission.
