The Center for Citizens with Disabilities (CCD) has urged governments at all levels to adopt and enforce budgetary policies that prioritize the welfare of Persons Living With Disabilities (PWDs).
Acting Director Mr. Godwin Unumeri made this call during a Wednesday training workshop for PWDs on rights advocacy and advocacy action plans. Addressing the topic of “Disability-inclusive budgeting,” Unumeri emphasized the importance of ensuring PWDs’ involvement in budget planning and implementation stages by state governments.
He highlighted the existing gaps and prejudices that hinder full inclusion of PWDs in budgetary considerations, urging governments to address these issues. Unumeri stressed the need for budgets to incorporate provisions for easy access to all public infrastructure for PWDs.
Additionally, he urged members of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) to advocate for budgets that prioritize their needs. Unumeri also expressed concern over the lack of a comprehensive database for PWDs in Edo State and criticized the non-implementation of the PWDs law, which was passed two years ago.
