Ex-Liverpool captain Alan Hansen 'seriously ill in hospital'

Liverpool Football Club announced on Sunday that their esteemed former captain, Alan Hansen, is currently hospitalized and facing serious health concerns.

Hansen, renowned for his illustrious 14-year tenure at Liverpool, where he secured an impressive 16 trophies including eight league titles, three European Cups, two FA Cups, and three League Cups.

Having joined Liverpool from Patrick Thistle in 1977, Hansen remains among the club’s top-10 appearance holders and has represented Scotland 26 times.

Liverpool FC conveyed their solidarity, stating, “The thoughts and support of everyone at Liverpool FC are with our legendary former captain Alan Hansen, who is currently seriously ill in hospital.” They further added, “The club is in contact with Alan’s family to extend our assistance during this challenging period. 

Our heartfelt thoughts, wishes, and hopes are with Alan and the entire Hansen family. Further updates will be provided as we receive them, and we kindly request respecting the Hansen family’s privacy.”

Gary Lineker, Hansen’s former colleague on “Match of the Day,” expressed his shock, tweeting, “Horrendous news. Thoughts are with Alan, Janet, and all the family.”

The BBC’s flagship program also shared their support, stating, “The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Match of the Day are with Alan and his family at this difficult time.”
