Honourable Adedeji Dhikrullahi Olajide, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Information and Communication Technology (ICT), representing Ibadan North-West/Ibadan South-West federal constituency in Oyo State, has asserted that the average Nigerian worker struggles to afford essential commodities such as rice and other food items.
Olajide, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), emphasized the urgent need for an increase in the minimum wage across the country. Speaking on the floor of the green chamber in Abuja on Wednesday, he underscored that the current monthly minimum wage falls significantly short of meeting the needs of Nigerian workers.
Expressing concern over the economic realities facing citizens, Olajide stressed the necessity for the government to adjust the minimum wage to align with the current economic situation. He highlighted the importance of adequately compensating workers to foster their productivity and contribute to national development.
Olajide urged the National Assembly, particularly the House of Representatives, to intervene by enacting legislation that would improve wage structures and enhance the welfare of Nigerian workers.
In his words, “The rising cost of living in Nigeria demands a reassessment of the minimum wage. The current 60,000 naira minimum wage proposed by the federal government is no longer sufficient. We must prioritize the welfare of our workers, who form the backbone of our economy, by ensuring they are fairly compensated and motivated to drive our nation’s progress and development.”
