Over thirty persons including a site manager are said to be trapped following a mining pit collapse at Galkogo village of Shiroro local government area of Niger state.
The mine site which belongs to a company named ‘African Minerals and logistics limited’ according to the Niger state Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has one unidentified person confirmed dead.
According to the Director General of the NSEMA, Alhaji Abdullahi Baba Arah the cause of the collapsed was as a result of the rainfall impacts that soften the soil.
“One person has been confirmed dead, six people were rescued with severe injuries, while over 30 persons which include the site manager, Alh Ibrahim Ishaku were still trapped as at yesterday”.
The DG in a statement by the Public Relations Officer, NSEMA, Hussaini Ibrahim disclosed that as Monday 3rd June, 2024, rescuers have to run for their lives as the mine kept falling inside.
Accordingly, he said “due to the unacceptable nature of that environment as a result of banditry, the information of the incident is still very scanty, including rescue operations.
“However, excavators have been deployed for the rescue operations”.
